STL adopts 100% Green Power, 80% Emission Cut

Sterlite Technologies Ltd (NSE: STLTECH) issued a press release in Mumbai on 27 August 2026 announcing major progress toward its net‑zero and decarbonisation targets. The company has shifted all four of its Indian manufacturing facilities located in Chhatrapati Sambhaji Nagar (Aurangabad), Maharashtra, from conventional fossil‑fuel grid electricity to 100 % green power generated from wind and solar, facilitated through Maharashtra State Electricity Distribution Company Limited (MSEDCL). This transition is projected to achieve an approximately 65 % reduction in market‑based Scope 2 emissions for its optical fibre (OF) and optical fibre cable (OFC) plants.

In parallel, STL has incorporated 100 % green hydrogen into its glass‑manufacturing process, a high‑energy step in optical fibre production that previously relied on conventionally produced hydrogen and oxygen, thereby decarbonising one of the most difficult‑to‑abate stages of the value chain.

The environmental impact on its product line is highlighted by the G.657.A2 optical fibre, whose carbon footprint has been lowered from 4.7 kg CO₂e per fibre kilometre to 0.9 kg CO₂e per fibre kilometre – an overall reduction of about 80 %.

STL also revised its corporate mobility policy, introducing enhanced incentives and higher limits for employees who choose electric or hybrid vehicles under the Company Car Policy, aiming to systematically reduce Scope 3 operational carbon emissions.

“Decarbonization at STL is a set of connected decisions, from the power that runs our plants to the materials that go into every kilometre of fibre we make, to the policies we make for our employees,” said Rahul Puri, CEO, ONB, STL.

The release notes that STL is a global leader in advanced connectivity solutions, serving data‑centre, telecom, internet service provider and enterprise customers in more than 100 countries, with manufacturing footprints across North America, Europe and Asia.
