STL Decarbonisation Progress
On 27 August 2026, Sterlite Technologies Ltd (STL) (NSE: STLTECH) issued a press release announcing a series of sustainability initiatives aimed at achieving its Net‑Zero ambitions. The company has transitioned all four of its Indian manufacturing facilities located in Chhatrapati Sambhaji Nagar (Aurangabad), Maharashtra, from conventional fossil‑fuel‑based grid power to 100% green power generated from wind and solar sources. This transition, enabled through Maharashtra State Electricity Distribution Company Limited (MSEDCL), is projected to deliver an approximately 65% market‑based reduction in scope‑2 emissions for the optical fibre (OF) and optical fibre cable (OFC) plants.
In parallel, STL has incorporated 100% green hydrogen into its glass manufacturing operations, a critical and energy‑intensive step in optical fibre production that historically relied on conventionally produced hydrogen and oxygen. The use of green hydrogen effectively decarbonises one of the most difficult‑to‑abate stages of the optical fibre value chain.
The company also highlighted its Life Cycle Assessment efforts, noting that a range of its optical products now carry eco‑labelled certification, reflecting reduced environmental impact across the product lifecycle.
STL updated its corporate mobility policy to further lower its scope‑3 operational carbon footprint. Under the revised Company Car Policy, employees who opt for electric or hybrid vehicles receive dedicated incentives and higher limits, encouraging a shift toward low‑carbon‑emission transportation.
A flagship example of the firm’s product‑level decarbonisation is the G.657.A2 optical fibre, widely used in data centre and telecom networks. The carbon footprint of this fibre has been reduced from 4.7 kg CO₂e per fibre kilometre (fkm) to 0.9 kg CO₂e/fkm, representing an 80% reduction.
