Surgeon Vice Admiral Manish Honwad, VSM has assumed the appointment of Director and Commandant of the Armed Forces Medical College (AFMC), Pune effective September 1, 2026. The officer brings 37 years of distinguished service in the Armed Forces Medical Services, having completed his MBBS from AFMC in 1989 and MD in Anesthesiology and Critical Care Medicine from the same institution in 1998. His qualifications include being a WHO Fellow in Neuro-Anesthesiology from the National Institute of Mental Health and Neurosciences (NIMHANS), Bangalore, and holding an M.Phil in Public Administration from the Indian Institute of Public Administration, New Delhi.
Honwad's career includes prestigious academic, clinical, and administrative appointments such as Additional Director General Medical Services (Navy) at Naval HQ, Commanding Officer of INHS Sanjivani, and Commanding Officer of INHS Asvini. He is also a Certified Healthcare Simulation Educator from the Society for Simulation in Healthcare (SSIH), USA and an international speaker on Healthcare Simulation at various conferences.
The officer has received multiple recognitions including the Vishisht Seva Medal in 2025, two Chief of Naval Staff Commendations (2006, 2013), FOC-in-C (South) Commendation in 2007, and FOC-in-C (West) Commendation in 2011. The Director General Armed Forces Medical Services conveyed best wishes on behalf of all ranks for Honwad's successful tenure at AFMC Pune.
