Tata Communications Announces AI Super Highway Investment

Tata Communications, a global communications‑technology provider, disclosed a strategic investment of approximately USD 450 million to construct an AI super highway in India. The project will create about 10,000 km of new long‑haul fiber, forming one of the country’s largest AI‑ready connectivity networks and integrating with the company’s existing global network backbone.

The AI super highway is designed to deliver ultra‑low‑latency, high‑capacity, and resilient connectivity required for next‑generation AI workloads. Tata Communications highlighted that India’s data‑centre industry is set for rapid expansion, driven by accelerating cloud adoption, AI deployment, stricter data‑localisation mandates, and rising enterprise demand for robust digital infrastructure. As data‑centre capacity grows, the firm argues that connectivity becomes as critical as compute power and energy availability.

Rupesh Chokshi, Chief Product and Technology Officer, Executive Vice President & Global Business Head – Network Services, stated that the AI economy needs a network built for speed, scale and resilience, and that Tata Communications’ AI Network Fabric will enable global customers to scale AI with confidence by linking India’s AI and data‑centre hubs to the world.

The rollout will be phased. The first phase targets the Mumbai‑Pune‑Hyderabad‑Chennai corridor, identified as a key AI and hyperscale growth route. Subsequent phases will broaden the network to emerging data‑centre ecosystems on the East Coast and Western India, including Vizag, Bhubaneswar, Jamnagar, GIFT City and other strategic locations. By connecting these corridors and data‑centre clusters to international cable‑landing stations, the super highway aims to position India as a strategic gateway in the global digital‑infrastructure landscape.

In parallel, Tata Communications will continue to scale its existing National Long Distance and metro network footprint to support current enterprise and data‑centre connectivity needs while building capacity for future demand.
