The race, held at an altitude of 10,000 feet (approximately 3,050 metres) in Tawang, Arunachal Pradesh, is positioned as one of the world’s highest‑altitude road marathons and is affiliated with the Association of International Marathons and Distance Races (AIMS).

Prize Structure and Race Categories

The marathon offers a total prize pool of ₹65 lakh, which is distributed across all official distances – the Full Marathon, Half Marathon, 10 km, and 5 km Fun Run. Prizes are allocated to multiple age groups ranging from under‑18 to 60‑and‑above, ensuring competitive incentives for a broad participant base.

Registration Concessions and Acclimatization Requirements

A 50 % registration fee concession is provided to defence personnel and residents of Arunachal Pradesh. All participants are required to arrive in Tawang two to three days before race day for mandatory acclimatization, bib collection, and medical evaluation to mitigate altitude‑related health risks.

Operational Support and Safety Measures

The event is jointly supported by the Government of Arunachal Pradesh, led by Chief Minister Pema Khandu, and the Indian Army. Full‑scale medical coverage, military‑grade aid stations, and logistical support are in place to ensure runner safety throughout the mountainous course. Professional event management is handled by VAS Coreworks LLP, which oversees chip‑timing infrastructure, volunteer coordination, and overall operations.

Environmental and Cultural Initiatives

TM2026 incorporates a conservation campaign titled “Save the Himalayas – Say no to single‑use plastic.” The marathon commits to plastic‑free zones, eco‑friendly support stations, and reusable hydration solutions, aiming to promote zero‑waste principles among participants and local communities.

Culturally, the marathon showcases the heritage of the Monpa people through regional music, traditional dance performances, and an evening cultural festival, offering participants an immersive experience of local traditions and hospitality.

Statements from Officials

Deputy Commissioner of Tawang, Ms. Namgyal Angmo, IAS, emphasized that the marathon is not merely a sporting event but a celebration of the region’s unique culture, natural beauty, and spirit, with a focus on responsible and sustainable growth.
