TCL Solar announced that it has been awarded the module supply contract by DT Infrastructure (DTI) for Edify Energy’s 720 MW Smoky Creek and Guthrie’s Gap Solar Power Stations in Central Queensland, with installation expected to begin in early Q2 2027.

Project Details

The combined 720 MWp capacity will make the two stations the largest solar project worldwide to utilise back‑contact (BC) technology. The stations are expected to generate up to 1,589,000 MWh of renewable energy annually and will incorporate advanced energy storage. TCL Solar will supply Back Contact modules delivering module efficiencies of up to 24.2 %, backed by a 30‑year performance warranty and a 15‑year product warranty.

Technology and Significance

Back Contact technology, pioneered by SunPower since 1985, is now being deployed at utility scale, moving beyond premium residential markets. The award underscores confidence in high‑efficiency BC modules for large‑scale renewable infrastructure.

Corporate Background

TCL Solar is part of TCL SunPower, the Australian subsidiary of TCL Zhonghuan (TZE), a Tier‑One global solar manufacturer that reported USD 44.9 billion revenue in 2024 and held an 18.9 % share of global silicon wafer production. Established in 2008, TCL SunPower is one of Australia’s longest‑serving solar providers, offering both TCL Solar and SunPower module brands. SunPower was integrated into TCL’s portfolio in March 2025, and TCL acquired DAS Solar in 2026, strengthening its position in high‑efficiency solar technologies.

Location

The projects are situated approximately 75 km south of Rockhampton and 40 km north of Biloela on the traditional lands of the Gaangalu Nation People in Central Queensland.
