Press Release Overview

On 17 October 2026, Techofest Global, an Indian start‑up headquartered in Gujarat, announced the development of an indigenous, patented technology that converts waste human hair into bioethanol. The announcement positions the process as the start of a "5G" generation of non‑cellulosic, non‑sugar‑based biofuels, aiming to lessen dependence on traditional first‑ and second‑generation feedstocks such as sugars, grains and agricultural residues, thereby easing the fuel‑vs‑food/fodder debate.

Technology Details

The core 5G ethanol process employs a single‑stage saccharification followed by fermentation, eliminating the costly pre‑treatment and cellulolytic cocktail steps required by conventional 2G technologies. The process records biocatalyst recovery rates of 85‑90% and is currently being validated in a pilot facility with a capacity of approximately 100 L. In parallel, the joint‑venture R&D facility has demonstrated two additional cost‑effective pathways: ethanol production from used cooking oil (UCO) and a proprietary SIM process that converts disposed sanitary napkins into enriched bio‑methane. The bio‑methane process is reported to be twice as fast as existing methods, featuring improved intermittent feeding cycles and continuous gas harvest.

Team and Advisory Board

The venture is led by Dr. Ravi, founder‑CEO, who brings over three decades of experience designing customized nuclear fusion reactors for international programmes such as ITER, JET/UKAEA and SST‑1. Biochemical engineers Dr. Navnit (former CTO) and Dr. Kabilan (former CEO of Biomakerz, Chennai) are credited with the underlying bioprocess portfolio, having worked on biorefinery process intensification for more than ten years. Ms. Bhumika, co‑founder and corporate advisor, confirms that pre‑commercialisation trials are underway and that commercial roll‑out is imminent. Market entry and global commercialisation are overseen by Mr. Ronak. The advisory board includes Dr. V.S. Tripathi (former Joint Director, DRDE Gwalior), Dr. B.S. Munjal (former Director, Structures and Thermal Group, SAC/ISRO), and Dr. A.V. Santhanababu (former scientist, Satish Dhawan Space Centre), all of whom align the project with the Atmanirbhar and Viksit Bharat Vision 2047.

Strategic Implications

By valorising municipal and industrial waste streams, the technology creates an industrial symbiosis ecosystem that up‑cycles residues lacking an end‑of‑life, potentially supplementing the current ethanol blend pool (E20, E27, etc.) with a non‑food‑based source.
