Programme Overview
Tetra Pak, partnering with Alternative Development Initiatives (ADI), completed the handover of rejuvenated community ponds in the villages of Pur and Rase, located in Khed Taluka, Pune, Maharashtra. The handover ceremony, attended by Gajanan Patil, CEO of Zilla Parishad Pune, marked a milestone of the Integrated Water Resource Development and Management (IWRDM) Programme, Tetra Pak’s first social‑impact initiative in India focused on water conservation.
Water‑Holding Capacity and Recharge Impact
The combined water‑holding capacity of the restored structures now stands at 58.89 million litres, up from the pre‑intervention total of roughly 22.43 million litres. In Pur, capacity increased from 11.16 million to 32.13 million litres; in Rase, it rose from 11.27 million to 26.76 million litres. The programme estimates an annual groundwater recharge potential of 73.61 million litres across both villages, comprising 40.16 million litres for Pur and 33.45 million litres for Rase.
Community Mobilisation and Capacity Building
Six self‑help groups, involving 61 women, were mobilised to receive training in livelihood skills such as stitching and soap making. A total of 23 community awareness and capacity‑building programmes were conducted, engaging over 830 participants, including schoolchildren who received sessions on water conservation, plantation, and responsible resource use.
Future Phase – Efficient Agriculture and Stewardship
The next phase will focus on seasonal water budgeting, farmer capacity building, and the implementation of 20 drip‑irrigation pilots scheduled for the 2026‑27 agricultural season. Additional interventions will include open‑well recharge, rooftop rainwater harvesting, and continued groundwater and rainfall monitoring to support sustainable water use.
Statements from Key Leaders
Cassio Simoes, Managing Director, Tetra Pak South Asia, emphasized the company’s responsibility to the local community and highlighted the science‑led, community‑centred approach to water security. Sarang Kulkarni, Hydrogeologist at ADI, noted that the programme’s design was based on detailed groundwater assessments and that the increased water‑holding capacity of more than 36 million litres underpins the projected recharge potential.
