Overview

The Sustainable Marketplace™, an India‑based sustainable e‑commerce platform, officially launched on June 15 2026 in New Delhi. The platform aims to create a transparent and inclusive ecosystem for conscious businesses and consumers by addressing fragmented sustainability narratives and limited market access for ethical firms.

Sustainability Framework

The Marketplace operates on a proprietary Sustainability Impact Matrix™ built on seven sustainability pillars and 64 attributes. The pillars evaluate ethical sourcing, responsible manufacturing, labour practices, packaging, circularity, environmental impact, workplace conditions and broader business accountability. The matrix provides a structured, transparent assessment of products and businesses across environmental, ethical, social, labour and accountability dimensions.

Operational Model

Unlike typical e‑commerce sites, the Marketplace does not levy listing fees, shipping charges from sellers, or payment transaction fees. Sellers participate on a transparent margin‑based model designed to support artisans, women‑led enterprises, ethical brands and small responsible businesses across India. Product categories include lifestyle, wellness, fashion, home essentials, pantry goods, handmade items, children’s products and everyday essentials.

Leadership and Partnerships

The platform was founded by Ms. Bindu Thakur, a Delhi School of Economics alumna and former public servant in India and Australia, who has previously worked with the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP). Ms. Thakur highlighted the need for clear, reliable sustainability information rather than confusing labels. The Sustainable Marketplace™ has joined the SME Climate Hub, aligning with the UN Climate Change “Race to Zero” campaign.
