Toyota Explores Hydrogen Trucks Amid Fuel Surge

Toyota Motor Corp (NYSE:TM) is considering the use of hydrogen‑powered trucks to ship auto parts, a move prompted by elevated gasoline prices and strained supplies that followed the Iran war. In a Bloomberg interview, Vice Chairman Koji Sato said the company could eventually deploy hydrogen as an energy source within its own factories and also extend its use across suppliers’ logistics networks. While hydrogen has been touted as a critical element for achieving carbon neutrality, the fuel remains costly and inefficient to produce, store, and transport, limiting its adoption in passenger‑car fuel‑cell models, which are barely selling in Japan. Consequently, Toyota executives are shifting focus toward commercial‑vehicle applications such as logistics trucks. The discussion occurs against a backdrop of persistently high fuel prices after the Iran conflict, and Toyota’s share price rose 0.79% after the news was reported.
