Toyota Motor reported that its global vehicle sales declined for the fourth consecutive month in May 2026. Worldwide sales, including the Lexus brand, dropped 7.2% year‑on‑year to 834,279 units. Sales outside Japan fell 9.6% to 715,898 units, while domestic Japanese sales rose 11.1% to 118,381 units.

In China, encompassing Hong Kong and Macau, sales slumped 31.7% year‑on‑year to 102,299 vehicles, which Toyota attributed to a challenging market environment and rising gasoline prices. By contrast, Indian sales increased 15.3% year‑on‑year to 30,227 vehicles, supported by strong demand for the Urban Cruiser Hyryder, Innova Hycross and Innova Crysta models and recent automobile tax reductions. North American sales were essentially flat, slipping 0.1% to 280,539 units.

Toyota’s global production, also including Lexus, fell 5.5% year‑on‑year to 765,470 vehicles in May, marking the first annual decline in three months. The company said the drop was due to fewer operating days at some plants despite overall steady demand. Overseas production decreased 9.4%, whereas domestic output rose 3.7%.

For the cumulative first five months of 2026, Toyota’s total global sales were 4.14 million vehicles, down 3.5% from the same period a year earlier, and total production was 3.98 million units, down 2.1% year‑on‑year.
