Green Energy Milestone Achievement
UltraTech Cement Limited has commissioned 116.55 MW of wind capacity at its Inter-State Transmission System (ISTS)-connected wind-solar hybrid project in Barmer, Rajasthan. The company has also commissioned 10 MW of Waste Heat Recovery System (WHRS) capacity at Sarlanagar Cement Works, its integrated manufacturing unit in Karnataka.
With these additions, UltraTech's cumulative installed green energy capacity has reached 2,024 MW, making it the first cement company in India to commission over 2 GW of green energy capacity for captive use.
Current Green Energy Capacity Breakdown
The 2,024 MW green energy capacity comprises:
- 1,580 MW of renewable energy capacity
- 444 MW of WHRS capacity
This green energy portfolio currently meets about 48% of the Company's total power requirements.
Operational Performance
In FY27 so far, nearly a third of UltraTech's 76 manufacturing units in India have maintained green energy utilisation above 50% of their electricity requirement. Five of these units have exceeded 95% green energy utilization.
Management Commentary
Mr K C Jhanwar, Managing Director, UltraTech Cement Limited, stated: "Crossing the 2 GW green energy milestone is the result of a strategy we have pursued consistently over the past decade. Cement is an energy-intensive, hard-to-abate sector, and showing that reliability and growth can go hand in hand with a rapid shift to green energy sets a benchmark for the industry. With nearly half of our power needs now met through green energy, we are significantly less exposed to fossil fuel supply constraints and power price volatility."
Strategic Initiatives
UltraTech continues to advance its portfolio of renewable energy and WHRS projects to increase the share of green energy in its power mix. The Company commissioned 430 MW of green energy capacity in FY26.
The Company is progressively integrating Battery Energy Storage Systems (BESS) across its operations to enhance renewable energy utilisation and supply reliability. In 2025, UltraTech operationalised India's first on-site hybrid round-the-clock renewable energy project, which combines solar, wind and battery storage, at its integrated manufacturing unit, Sewagram Cement Works in Gujarat.
UltraTech has not invested in new captive thermal power capacity, whether for greenfield projects or brownfield expansions at its integrated units, for more than ten years.
Future Targets
UltraTech aims to increase the share of green energy in its total power mix to 85% by 2030. As a member of RE100, UltraTech has committed to meeting 100% of its electricity requirement through renewable sources by 2050.
Benefits and Impact
The green energy portfolio strengthens energy security across UltraTech's footprint by reducing dependence on conventional grid power and fossil fuel-based power, and lowering exposure to volatility in coal and electricity prices.
