Overview
Chennai‑based entrepreneur Sabarisan Vedamurthy and his wife Senthamarai Stalin announced a philanthropic contribution of £1.3 million to support two academic initiatives that will place Tamil Nadu’s Dravidian legacy on the global scholarly agenda.
At the University of Cambridge, the couple have established the M. Karunanidhi Ph.D. Studentship together with a post‑doctoral research programme. The £1.3 million endowment will fund doctoral research for three years and also finance post‑doctoral projects that examine the intellectual foundations of the Dravidian Movement and its contemporary relevance. In recognition of this donation, both donors have been inducted into the Guild of Cambridge Benefactors.
Complementing the Cambridge effort, the donors have created the Ambedkar‑Kalaignar Visiting Fellowship at SOAS University of London. The fellowship, funded through an annual commitment, covers travel, visa costs, stipends and university fees for a researcher, journalist or policymaker to spend an academic term at SOAS engaging with international scholars on governance, social justice and marginalised communities. The inaugural call attracted 88 applications from diverse professional and academic backgrounds. The first fellowship was awarded to Bagavanidhi M, a researcher with over a decade of experience on Dalit and Adivasi welfare rights in Tamil Nadu. His project investigates the evolution of governance mechanisms for Scheduled Castes and Scheduled Tribes in the state, focusing on the shift toward legislative frameworks that ensure equitable development and welfare.
Together, the Cambridge studentship and the SOAS visiting fellowship represent a long‑term commitment to building sustained international academic engagement around the Dravidian Movement. By funding independent scholarship, nurturing emerging researchers and forging institutional partnerships with globally recognised universities, the initiatives aim to embed Tamil Nadu’s experiences in social justice, inclusive development and democratic governance within a broader international academic discourse, thereby establishing Dravidian Studies as a recognized area of global research.
