Overview
Chennai‑based entrepreneur Sabarisan Vedamurthy and his wife Senthamarai Stalin have announced a philanthropic contribution of £1.3 million to support two major academic initiatives in the United Kingdom that focus on the Dravidian Movement and its relevance to social justice, governance and democratic development.
Cambridge Initiative
The couple have established the M. Karunanidhi Ph.D. Studentship and an associated postdoctoral research programme at the University of Cambridge. The funding is earmarked to support doctoral research for a period of three years and to enable further postdoctoral work. In recognition of this contribution, both donors have been inducted into the Guild of Cambridge Benefactors.
SOAS Initiative
A complementary programme, the Ambedkar‑Kalaignar Visiting Fellowship, has been created at SOAS University of London. The fellowship is funded on an annual basis and covers travel, visa costs, stipends and university fees for the selected fellow. The inaugural call attracted 88 applications from a range of professional and academic backgrounds. The first fellow appointed is Bagavanidhi M, a researcher with over a decade of experience on Dalit and Adivasi welfare rights in Tamil Nadu. His research examines the evolution of governance mechanisms for Scheduled Castes and Scheduled Tribes in Tamil Nadu, particularly the shift toward legislative frameworks that ensure equitable development and welfare.
Strategic Intent
Both the Cambridge and SOAS programmes are described as a long‑term commitment to foster international academic engagement on the Dravidian Movement, aiming to position Dravidian Studies as a sustained area of global scholarly research. By supporting independent scholarship, nurturing emerging researchers and creating institutional partnerships with globally recognised universities, the initiatives seek to integrate Tamil Nadu’s experiences in social justice, inclusive development and democratic governance into broader international academic discourse.
