Vedamurthy & Stalin Fund £1.3 mn Dravidian Scholarship Initiatives at Cambridge and SOAS

Chennai‑based entrepreneur Sabarisan Vedamurthy and his wife Senthamarai Stalin have committed a total of £1.3 million to support two major academic initiatives in the United Kingdom that aim to bring the Dravidian legacy of Tamil Nadu to a global scholarly platform.

At the University of Cambridge, the contribution establishes the M. Karunanidhi Ph.D. Studentship together with a post‑doctoral research programme. The funding is earmarked to support doctoral research for a period of three years and to enable further post‑doctoral work, with the donors being recognised by induction into the Guild of Cambridge Benefactors.

Complementing the Cambridge effort, the donors have also created the Ambedkar‑Kalaignar Visiting Fellowship at SOAS University of London. The fellowship is financed through an annual commitment that covers travel, visa costs, stipends and university fees for the selected scholar. The inaugural round attracted 88 applications from a diverse pool of professionals and academics. The first fellow, Bagavanidhi M, a researcher with over ten years of experience on Dalit and Adivasi welfare rights in Tamil Nadu, was appointed. His research will examine the evolution of governance mechanisms for Scheduled Castes and Scheduled Tribes in Tamil Nadu, focusing on the shift toward legislative frameworks that ensure equitable development and welfare.

Both initiatives are presented as a long‑term commitment to foster international academic exchange, encourage independent scholarship on the Dravidian Movement, and embed Tamil Nadu’s experiences in social justice, inclusive development and democratic governance within broader global academic discourse.
