Verbund, the Austrian power producer, said it uses Siemens S7 Series programmable logic controllers (PLCs) that were identified in a U.S. government advisory about an active hacker threat. The advisory, issued by several U.S. agencies on Wednesday, warned that unidentified hackers are targeting Siemens S7 PLCs deployed in U.S. critical infrastructure such as water facilities, with some incidents suspected to be linked to Iran. Verbund’s spokesperson clarified that the company’s Siemens S7 PLCs are employed only in very specialized areas and are not internet‑accessible, unlike the U.S. installations referenced in the warning. Verbund reported no incidents or security breaches related to these components. The company emphasized that the systems cannot be accessed or located from the internet, mitigating the risk highlighted in the U.S. alert.
