VinFast’s Extended Warranty and Ownership Support in India
VinFast announced a comprehensive warranty and ownership package for its electric vehicles (EVs) in India, aiming to mitigate buyer anxiety over unfamiliar battery technology. The company offers a standard vehicle warranty of seven years or 160,000 km and a dedicated battery warranty of ten years or 200,000 km, whichever occurs first. In addition, customers receive three years or 36,000 km of free maintenance and complimentary charging at VinFast’s V‑Green charging stations until 31 March 2029.
The firm is also expanding its after‑sales network, targeting the establishment of 120 service workshops across India through partnerships with MyTVS, RoadGrid and Global Assure. Parallelly, V‑Green is collaborating with RoadGrid and Hindustan Petroleum Corporation Limited (HPCL) to broaden EV charging infrastructure.
Consumer Research Highlights the Value of Long Warranties
Multiple studies underscore the market relevance of extended warranties for EVs. A U.S. automobile market study found that consumers would pay a median of USD 850—approximately 3.1% of a median vehicle price—for an additional year of warranty coverage, and that longer warranties are especially valued when perceived product quality is lower. An analysis of over 9,000 used‑car auctions on eBay revealed that cars sold with a warranty command an average price premium of about 11%, with the effect amplified for sellers with weaker reputations.
In the EV context, a 2024 UK study by the Green Finance Institute reported that 31% of non‑EV owners would be more likely to switch to an electric car if a battery warranty exceeded eight years, a sentiment close to the 34% who cited price parity and the same 34% who pointed to expanded charging infrastructure as decisive factors. Strategy&’s 2024 eReadiness survey indicated that 80% of Indian respondents consider a battery warranty—whether from an OEM or a third party—a key factor when contemplating a used EV.
Experience appears to reduce warranty‑related concerns: Plug In America’s 2025 EV Driver Annual Survey showed that 19.1% of respondents regarded battery warranty as a concern at purchase, falling to 9.1% among current owners. Correspondingly, worries about battery lifetime dropped from 26.7% at purchase to 19% among owners.
Implications
The extended warranty, combined with free maintenance and charging, positions VinFast to address both the financial and practical uncertainties that prospective EV buyers face. By coupling warranty protection with a growing service and charging network, the company seeks to lower perceived risk and encourage broader EV adoption in the Indian market.
