Visa Secures PBOC Approval for Domestic Payments
Visa Inc (NYSE:V) announced that the People’s Bank of China has approved its application to begin formal preparations for establishing a domestic bankcard clearing institution in China. The approval enables Visa to start the preparatory steps required under PBOC regulations but does not yet permit the company to clear domestic transactions. Visa’s Chief Executive Ryan McInerney said the approval marks a significant step in the firm’s more than 40‑year presence in China and expressed the company’s intention to take the necessary steps to operate domestically. China is one of the world’s largest digital payments markets, yet domestic transaction volumes are currently dominated by local payment networks and platforms. By establishing a domestic clearing institution, Visa could gain a pathway to expand its footprint beyond international card payments, subject to further regulatory requirements. The company operates a global payments network spanning over 200 countries and territories.
