Contract Award and Strategic Significance

Western Carriers (India) Limited has secured a 15-year agreement with Syama Prasad Mookerjee Port Authority (SMPA) for the development and operations of the General Cargo Terminal (GCT) at the GCD Yard of the Kolkata Dock System. This marks WCIL's first operational base on India's east coast, complementing its existing 42-acre Multimodal Cargo Terminal at Devaliya, Gujarat. The development strengthens the company's presence across the critical East-West freight corridor.

Terminal Specifications and Capabilities

  • Location: GCD Yard, Kolkata Dock System, connected to Eastern Railway network through Sealdah and Budge Budge sections
  • Connectivity: Benefits from Kolkata's extensive road, rail, and inland-waterway connectivity
  • Cargo Handling: Designed to handle dry bulk, break-bulk, and all container categories including 20-foot, 40-foot, and specialized containers
  • Target Markets: Domestic and EXIM segments

Development Phases and Investment

  • Phase I: Fully operational from launch with completed equipment and manpower deployment
  • Phase II: Expected to commence within next 90 days, focusing on enhancing throughput capacity, operational efficiency, and service offerings
  • Initial Investment: Approximately ₹13.68 crore for further civil development (based on Port Authority estimates, subject to revision)
