World Foundation Token Sale Funding
World Foundation, the independent non‑profit steward of the World Network, announced that it has secured an initial $52.5 million through a one‑year locked token sale aimed at strategic investors. The round was led by Pantera Capital, which closed the first tranche, and also attracted commitments from Bain Capital Crypto, Eightco Holdings, Selini Capital, Susquehanna Crypto, along with other unnamed investors.
The token sold, WLD, is subject to a 12‑month lock‑up period as stipulated by the fundraising terms.
Background and Product
Originally launched as Worldcoin, the project was rebranded to World in 2024. It employs a bowling‑bowl‑sized “orb” to scan users’ irises, issuing a digital identity (World ID) and the associated cryptocurrency token WLD. World ID is promoted as a digital passport that can verify a holder’s humanity, a claim that has drawn scrutiny and temporary bans in certain jurisdictions over privacy concerns.
Market Rationale
World Foundation argues that the need for “Proof of Human” is becoming “acutely clear” amid rapid AI development, citing growing demand across consumer platforms, enterprise digital services, and the emerging “agentic web.” The firm warns that without such verification, advertising models could lose reliability, synthetic profiles might flood dating apps, and voting systems could become harder to validate.
Use of Proceeds
The newly raised capital will be deployed to expand World ID technology globally, targeting organizations, consumers, and AI agents to broaden adoption and support the projected increase in AI‑driven interactions.
Adoption Metrics
To date, more than 39 million people have joined the World Network. Of these, over 18 million humans have been verified using the Orb, and the network has recorded more than 475 million World ID proofs since its launch.
Executive Quote
Cosmo Jiang, General Partner at Pantera Capital, stated: “The need for Proof of Human is becoming acutely clear with the acceleration of AI development, and we see this in the influx of enterprise traction. We’re excited to continue supporting World’s mission at this inflection point in its growth.”
