Yatharth Hospital, Noida Extension, announced on 10 September 2026 that it successfully performed a Simultaneous Liver‑Kidney Transplant (SLKT) on a 50‑year‑old male patient suffering from end‑stage kidney disease and chronic liver disease caused by Hepatitis B infection.
The patient had previously undergone a right radical nephrectomy about one year earlier for a renal tumour, after which he developed chronic kidney disease and was on haemodialysis three times a week. His comorbidities also included Type 2 diabetes mellitus with diabetic nephropathy and neuropathy, hypertension, and single‑vessel coronary artery disease.
Transplant Details
- Donor organs: The liver portion was donated by the patient’s wife (B‑positive blood group) and the kidney was donated by his daughter (blood group compatible with the recipient). The liver transplant was ABO‑incompatible, requiring the B‑positive donor liver to be placed into an O‑positive recipient. The donor liver was also fatty, adding to the complexity.
- Surgical complexity: The kidney donor’s left kidney possessed two renal arteries, necessitating a complex vascular reconstruction using the Pantaloons anastomosis technique. Pre‑operative CT angiography revealed that the patient’s right iliac vessels were unsuitable for anastomosis, so the reconstructed kidney was connected to the left iliac vessels.
- Procedure duration: The combined surgery lasted approximately 15–16 hours, with coordinated efforts from liver transplant, kidney transplant, anaesthesia, blood‑bank and critical‑care teams.
- Donor surgery: Both the liver and kidney donor surgeries were performed laparoscopically.
Post‑Operative Outcome
Following the transplant, the patient showed good signs of recovery, and both the liver and kidney grafts began functioning well.
