Zydus Hospitals and Healthcare Research Private Limited announced several landmark gastrointestinal (GI) surgical cases performed at its Ahmedabad campus, underscoring the centre’s capability in complex, minimally‑invasive procedures.
Case 1 – Post‑partum Duplication Cyst
A 28‑year‑old new mother presented with persistent crampy abdominal pain that began in her third trimester and continued two months after delivery. After referral to GI surgeon Dr. Dhaivat Vaishnav, a CT scan revealed a large mass near the small intestine, identified as an intestinal duplication cyst measuring roughly 6 cm. The cyst was closely wrapped around the superior mesenteric artery and vein (SMA and SMV). Using a robotic surgical platform, the team removed the cyst while preserving the SMA, SMV, and their branches, a task that would have been considerably more difficult via open surgery. Histopathology later classified the lesion as a dermoid cyst. The patient was discharged three days post‑operation and continued to recover well during follow‑up visits.
Case 2 – Gastric Submucosal Lipoma in a Breast‑Cancer Survivor
A 70‑year‑old breast‑cancer survivor, previously hospitalised twice for emergency transfusions, presented with severe anaemia (hemoglobin 4.0 g/dL) and internal bleeding. Initial assessments elsewhere suggested metastasis, but Dr. Suril Vithalani reviewed PET‑CT imaging, which showed a fat‑density lesion consistent with a gastric submucosal lipoma measuring 5.3 cm. Standard mucosal biopsies correctly diagnose such lesions in only about 8 % of cases. Worldwide, fewer than 50 gastric submucosal lipomas have been reported, with 27 requiring surgery; this case likely represents the 28th surgical case and among the first performed robotically in the country. Dr. Vithalani performed a robotic‑assisted trans‑gastric enucleation, removing the lipoma and surrounding ulcerated tissue. Pathology confirmed a benign, encapsulated fatty mass. The patient’s hemoglobin normalized and she made a full recovery.
