BYD August Sales Up 18% to 440k Units
BYD Co. announced that vehicle sales in August reached just over 440,000 units, marking an 18% increase compared with the same month last year and also showing growth versus July, although the pace remains insufficient to achieve its annual sales target. Exports more than doubled in August, accounting for 43% of total deliveries, and the company’s international sales exceeded 50% of group revenue in the first half of the year for the first time, reflecting a strategic shift toward Southeast Asia, Europe and South America as the domestic Chinese market contracts amid weak consumer spending. The firm noted that it modified assembly lines during the first half of the year to prepare for upgraded batteries, but it will need to accelerate its sales rate to reach the lower end of its full‑year target of 5 million to 5.5 million units. BYD’s flagship factory in Hungary has come under scrutiny for alleged labor abuses by subcontractors; BYD responded that it complies with local laws and regulations. Additionally, the European Union is reportedly considering tariffs on Chinese hybrid vehicles, which could affect BYD’s export strategy.
