Chinese Big Banks Post Robust Q3 Earnings and Share Gains
China’s major state‑owned banks saw their Hong Kong‑listed shares climb on Monday following the release of third‑quarter results that showed the fastest profit growth in several years. Industrial and Commercial Bank of China (HK:1398) led the rally, rising as much as 3.6% by 02:35 GMT after reporting a 10% increase in net profit for the quarter. Agricultural Bank of China (HK:1288) shares advanced up to 2% on a 10.8% profit rise, while China Construction Bank (HK:0939) added 2.3% after posting a 9.8% profit increase. Bank of Communications (HK:3328) saw its share price move ‑1.40% despite announcing a 10.1% profit growth, and Bank of China (SS:601988) slipped ‑0.99% after reporting a more modest 6.4% profit rise.
The earnings improvements were attributed to stabilising net interest margins as banks re‑priced higher‑cost deposits, lower deposit‑cost pressures, steady asset quality, and supportive monetary conditions including mortgage‑interest subsidies. Gains from bond‑investment portfolios also contributed to the stronger bottom line.
Nevertheless, the banks highlighted ongoing challenges: weak credit demand, a slowing domestic economy, and emerging risks in technology‑sector lending were noted as headwinds that could temper future performance.
