MediaTek AI Chip Demand Boosts Share Price
MediaTek Inc. shares rose 2.3% to T$4,005 on Monday, after briefly climbing as much as 4%, following CEO Rick Tsai’s comments that demand for artificial‑intelligence (AI) chips will continue \"for sure\" despite possible pace variations.
During the post‑earnings‑call on Friday, Tsai said the company’s first AI accelerator has seen strong demand, with initial shipments that began last month expected to generate US$2.5 billion of revenue in the fourth quarter. He added that high‑volume production of the second AI accelerator is on track for the first quarter of 2028.
MediaTek reported third‑quarter revenue of T168.1 billion (approximately US$5.16 billion), representing an 18.3% year‑on‑year increase, and net income of T28.2 billion, up 10.8% YoY.
The firm, Taiwan’s largest chip designer and second‑most valuable company on the Taiwan Stock Exchange with a market capitalisation of US$200 billion, is reducing its reliance on smartphones and aims to become a major supplier of custom AI chips to leading cloud providers. MediaTek sources its wafers from contract manufacturer TSMC.
