Provident Financial Holdings Q1 2026 Results
Provident Financial Holdings (NASDAQ:PROV) released its first‑quarter 2026 financial results for the period ended September 30, 2026. The company reported adjusted earnings per share of $0.25, which fell short of the analyst consensus estimate of $0.32 by $0.07. Net income for the quarter was $1.57 million, representing a 28% decline from the $2.18 million recorded in the prior quarter and a 6% decline from the $1.68 million earned in the comparable quarter of the prior year.
Revenue increased 9% year‑over‑year to $10.57 million, surpassing the consensus forecast of $10.3 million. The earnings shortfall was primarily attributed to a $777,000 provision for credit losses, up from a $626,000 recovery recorded in the year‑ago quarter. Management indicated that the higher provision was necessary to build the allowance for credit losses as rising interest rates extended the expected life of the loan portfolio.
Net interest income rose $840,000, or 9%, to $9.77 million compared with $8.93 million in the prior‑year quarter. Correspondingly, net interest margin expanded by 32 basis points to 3.32% from 3.00% a year earlier, reflecting higher average yields on interest‑earning assets and lower funding costs. Loans held for investment totaled $1.04 billion at September 30, 2026, a modest increase from $1.03 billion at June 30, 2026. Total deposits declined 1% to $897.7 million from $910.4 million in the sequential quarter.
The company’s efficiency ratio improved to 72% from 78% in the same quarter last year, indicating better cost management. Non‑performing assets remained low at 0.04% of total assets, unchanged from the prior quarter. The allowance for credit losses grew to $6.59 million, representing 0.64% of gross loans, up from $5.85 million at the end of June 2026.
"Our results for the first quarter reflected a higher provision for credit losses to build our allowance for credit losses, as an increase in interest rates extended the expected life of the loan portfolio. However, credit quality remains excellent," said Donavon P. Ternes, President and Chief Executive Officer.
Shares were flat in after‑hours trading following the release.
