Census 2011 data shows 45,296 children (0-14 years) were engaged in begging, with Uttar Pradesh (10,167) and Rajasthan (7,167) having the highest numbers.
Since the scheme's inception on 23.10.2023, 2,653 children have been rehabilitated, with 1,507 reunited with families and 635 enrolled in schools.
The Ministry states no new law is required as a dedicated central sector scheme for rehabilitation of persons, especially children, is already in place.
