AB PM-JAY Scheme Performance Update as of June 30, 2026
The Ayushman Bharat - Pradhan Mantri Jan Arogya Yojana (AB-PMJAY) has achieved significant milestones in providing health coverage to economically vulnerable populations. The scheme offers health coverage of ₹5 lakh per family per year for secondary and tertiary care hospitalization to 12 crore families, representing the bottom 40% of India's population.
Scheme Expansion and Coverage
The scheme underwent two major expansions in recent years. In March 2024, coverage was extended to approximately 37 lakh families of Accredited Social Health Activists, Anganwadi Workers, and Anganwadi Helpers. Further expansion occurred in October 2024, covering 6 crore senior citizens aged 70 years and above belonging to 4.5 crore families, irrespective of their socio-economic status.
Hospitalization Statistics and Network
As of June 30, 2026, the scheme has authorized a total of 12.69 crore hospital admissions amounting to ₹1.92 lakh crore. These services were delivered through an extensive network of 37,413 hospitals comprising both public and private facilities, enabling cashless treatment for beneficiaries.
Impact on Out-of-Pocket Expenditure
The scheme has significantly contributed to reducing out-of-pocket healthcare expenditure. According to National Health Accounts Estimates 2022-23, out-of-pocket expenditure as a proportion of total health expenditure declined substantially from 62.6% in 2014-15 to 43.4% in 2022-23. This reduction indicates households are bearing a considerably lower share of healthcare costs directly from their own pockets, attributed to increased public investment in health and the expansion of publicly financed health insurance schemes including AB-PMJAY.
The update was formally provided by the Union Minister of State for Health and Family Welfare, Shri Prataprao Jadhav, in a written reply in the Rajya Sabha on August 4, 2026.
