AB-PMJAY Scheme Performance and Expansion Update
As of June 30, 2026, the Ayushman Bharat Pradhan Mantri Jan Arogya Yojana (AB-PMJAY) has authorized 12.69 crore cashless hospital admissions with a total value of ₹1.92 lakh crore through a network of 37,413 public and private hospitals. The scheme provides health coverage of ₹5 lakh per family per year for secondary and tertiary care hospitalization to 12 crore economically vulnerable families, representing the bottom 40% of India's population.
Coverage Expansions
The scheme underwent significant expansions in 2024, first in March 2024 to include approximately 37 lakh families of Accredited Social Health Activists (ASHAs), Anganwadi Workers, and Anganwadi Helpers. Subsequently, in October 2024, coverage was further expanded to include all 6 crore senior citizens aged 70 years and above belonging to 4.5 crore families, irrespective of their socio-economic status.
Impact on Out-of-Pocket Expenditure
According to National Health Accounts Estimates 2022-23, the scheme has contributed significantly to reducing out-of-pocket expenditure as a proportion of total health expenditure, which declined from 62.6% in 2014-15 to 43.4% in 2022-23. This reduction indicates households are incurring a considerably lower share of healthcare costs directly from their pockets due to increased public investment in health and the expansion of publicly financed health insurance schemes including AB-PMJAY.
