The Ministry of Social Justice & Empowerment highlighted the case of Ajay Kumar, a 33-year-old scholar from Kangra, Himachal Pradesh, who is benefiting from the National Fellowship for Scheduled Caste Students (NFSC) Scheme. Kumar is pursuing his PhD with aspirations of academic excellence, career building, and improving his socio-economic circumstances. Before receiving assistance, he faced significant financial constraints and difficulties meeting educational expenses due to his family's limited resources.

The NFSC Scheme provided Kumar with financial assistance commencing in January 2024, totaling ₹40,700 which includes fellowship amount, House Rent Allowance (HRA), and contingency support. This support has addressed his financial constraints, educational expenses, and limitations in accessing research resources. The assistance has enabled Kumar to devote greater attention to his research and academic responsibilities while reducing financial pressure.

Since receiving the fellowship, Kumar reports improvements in his academic performance, research focus, confidence levels, and outlook toward future career opportunities. The support helps him work toward his long-term goal of completing his PhD and building a successful professional career. The case study demonstrates how targeted educational support through the NFSC Scheme helps reduce economic barriers for Scheduled Caste students from financially constrained backgrounds, enabling them to continue academic journeys and work toward research and higher education aspirations.
