Union Home Minister and Minister of Cooperation Shri Amit Shah attended the commemorative programme marking the 125th Birth Anniversary of Dr. Syama Prasad Mookerjee in Kolkata as the Chief Guest on July 6, 2026. The event was also attended by Chief Minister of West Bengal Shri Suvendu Adhikari, Union Minister Shri Gajendra Singh Shekhawat, and featured a video message by Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi.
Shah announced that a 125-foot-tall statue of Dr. Syama Prasad Mookerjee would be constructed in Kolkata, alongside the establishment of the Syama Prasad Mookerjee Institute dedicated to research on India's security. The West Bengal Government has declared Dr. Mookerjee's birth anniversary a public holiday.
The Home Minister detailed several policy initiatives undertaken by the West Bengal government, including the passage of the Maintenance of Public Order (Amendment) Bill, 2026 to enable strict action against criminals. The government has constituted a Durga Suraksha Squad for women's safety and begun the process of identifying and deporting infiltrators from the state.
A committee under Justice Brijendra Nath has been constituted to investigate corruption cases in West Bengal, with the intention to recover misappropriated funds once the report is submitted. Another committee has been formed to investigate cases of atrocities against women, and the government has given approval for prosecuting long-pending corruption cases. A committee has also been constituted for the implementation of the Uniform Civil Code.
Shah highlighted the implementation of several welfare schemes including the Annapurna Scheme, Ujjwala 3.0, free bus travel for women and girl students, the Lakhpati Didi Mission, and free medical treatment up to ₹5 lakh for the poor under Ayushman Bharat. Construction of a cancer hospital in North Bengal has begun, and work of handing over land for fencing to the BSF has been completed.
The speech referenced historical achievements including the abrogation of Article 370, which made Jammu and Kashmir an integral part of India, and the enactment of the Citizenship (Amendment) Act (CAA) to grant citizenship to persecuted Hindus.
