Union Home Minister and Minister of Cooperation Shri Amit Shah conducted an inspection of indigenous border security technologies at the Jhumagachh Border Outpost in Siliguri, West Bengal. The visit focused on reviewing state-of-the-art systems designed to strengthen border security, including a radio-based fence breach detection system that instantly alerts personnel by broadcasting pre-recorded messages when the border fence is tampered with.
Shah inspected multiple security systems including an infra-red alarm system installed to secure difficult terrains such as areas with rivers, streams, or gaps in border fencing, which provides advance warning to troops when infrared beams are interrupted. He also reviewed a gate management system designed to facilitate safe and smooth movement for civilians and farmers along the India-Bangladesh border, and visited a watchtower at the facility.
During the event, the Home Minister laid foundation stones virtually for three BSF projects worth ₹47 crore and additionally laid foundation for the construction of a 4-kilometer-long border fence costing ₹30 crore on newly acquired land for two border outposts in West Bengal, bringing total project value to ₹77 crore.
Shah interacted with BSF personnel during the 'Prahari Sammelan' and emphasized the government's commitment to making India's borders impregnable under Prime Minister Narendra Modi's leadership. He announced the establishment of a quadrangular security grid based on the concept of 'smart borders' to fortify borders, which will be implemented first at the grassroots level in West Bengal. The government prioritizes the welfare of security personnel and their families, and will expedite completion of pending infrastructure projects related to national security.
Following the inspection, Shah held a meeting on border-related issues in West Bengal and chaired another meeting regarding the full implementation of three new laws in the state along with the birth and death registration system. The event was attended by several dignitaries including the Chief Minister of West Bengal, Union Home Secretary, Director of the Intelligence Bureau, and Director General of BSF.
