Assam produces 90% of the world's naturally golden Muga silk, which is India's first GI-tagged silk
The sector currently provides livelihood to approximately 2.6 lakh silk farmer and weaver families across Assam
Current annual income for Muga silk producers is only ₹18,000-21,000 per year despite its premium qualities
Mission covers major Muga silk producing districts: Jorhat, Sivasagar, Lakhimpur, Dhemaji, Dibrugarh, Tinsukia, Majuli, and Sualkuchi
Targets for achievement by 2028:
Establishment of 5 modern Muga reeling units and 1 Muga spun mill
Formation of 30 Farmer Producer Organizations (FPOs) and over 1,180 farmer interest groups
Plant regeneration of Som and Soalu species across 5,000 hectares
Certification of over 80% of traded Muga silk through GI-linked system
Digital traceability mechanism for over 8,000 families
Expansion of Muga silk exports to over 2,000 kg per year

Development of Muga Silk Trail
Establishment of Silk Tourism Parks
Organization of annual Muga festivals
Involved agencies: Ministry of DoNER, Assam Government, Central Silk Board, Ministry of Textiles, and other central ministries/organizations
Mission employs "whole of government" approach with coordination between central ministries, Assam government, technical institutions, and private sector partners
