[Title — Baltic Dry Bulk Freight Index Climbs to Two-Month High]
On Wednesday, 5 August 2026, the Baltic Exchange’s dry bulk freight index recorded its strongest performance in over two months, driven by robust rates in the capesize and panamax vessel segments. The composite Baltic Dry Index (BADI) advanced 127 points, equivalent to a 4.3% increase, closing at 3,063, which is the highest reading since 3 June 2026.
In the capesize segment, the index surged 316 points, or 6.6%, to reach 5,094, also marking a peak not seen since 3 June 2026. Correspondingly, average daily earnings for capesize vessels—typically carrying 150,000‑ton cargoes such as iron ore and coal—rose by $2,867, bringing the daily revenue per vessel to $42,698.
The panamax index posted a gain of 49 points, a 2.2% rise, to settle at 2,236, its highest level since 17 July 2026.
Separately, iron ore futures experienced upward movement on the same day, supported by market concerns over a potential strike at BHP’s Port Hedland operations in Western Australia.
Overall, the upward trajectory in freight rates underscores heightened demand for bulk shipping capacity, particularly for capesize and panamax vessels, while commodity market participants remain attentive to labor disruptions in key iron ore supply chains.
