The Ministry of Women and Child Development released an update on the Beti Bachao Beti Padhao (BBBP) scheme, highlighting its evolution from a targeted policy intervention into a nationwide movement over the past eleven years. Launched on January 22, 2015, as a joint initiative of the Ministry of Women and Child Development, Ministry of Health and Family Welfare, and Ministry of Education, the scheme was conceived in response to declining Child Sex Ratio and pervasive gender-based discrimination.

The scheme has contributed significantly to improving key gender indicators, with the national Sex Ratio at Birth improving from 918 in 2014-15 to 929 in 2024-25 according to Health Management Information System data from the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare. This reflects sustained efforts toward preventing gender-biased sex selection and promoting institutional deliveries.

In the education sector, Unified District Information System for Education data shows girls' enrolment at the secondary level increased from 75.51% in 2014-15 to 80.2% in 2024-25, indicating improved retention and transition rates. The scheme emphasizes a lifecycle approach beginning with safe and dignified birth, ensuring early childhood care, and enabling education and empowerment of girls through sustained advocacy, community engagement, and convergence among Ministries and States/UTs.
