The Ministry of Women and Child Development provided an update on the Beti Bachao Beti Padhao (BBBP) Scheme and Pradhan Mantri Matru Vandana Yojana (PMMVY) in response to a Rajya Sabha question. The BBBP Scheme has been expanded to cover all districts of the country under the SAMBAL vertical of Mission Shakti during the 15th Finance Commission period, focusing on multi-sectoral interventions to create behavioral and social change regarding the perception of girl children across India.
According to Health Management Information System data from the Ministry of Health & Family Welfare, the Sex Ratio at Birth has shown improving trends, increasing from 918 to 929 at the national level during the period from 2014-15 to 2024-25. Educational metrics have also improved, with the Gross Enrolment Ratio of girls at the secondary school level increasing from 75.51% in 2014-15 to 83.4% in 2025-26 as per UDISE data from the Ministry of Education.
The Pradhan Mantri Matru Vandana Yojana, implemented by States/UTs across the country (except Telangana) since January 1, 2017, provides cash incentives of ₹5,000 directly to beneficiaries' bank or post office accounts via Direct Benefit Transfer for the first child. Eligible beneficiaries receive additional cash incentives under Janani Suraksha Yojana after institutional delivery, resulting in an average benefit of ₹6,000 per woman. For the second child, a cash incentive of ₹6,000 is provided specifically when the second child is a girl. Since its inception until July 15, 2026, the scheme has disbursed benefits amounting to ₹20,446 crores to approximately 4.35 crore women across the country.
