The Cabinet Committee on Economic Affairs, chaired by Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi, approved the development of a state-of-the-art Ship Repair Facility at Vadinar, Gujarat
Project will be jointly implemented by Deendayal Port Authority (DPA) and Cochin Shipyard Limited (CSL)
Total combined investment: Rs. 1,570 crore
Project type: Brownfield facility
Infrastructure includes: 650 metres jetty, two large floating dry docks, workshops, and associated marine infrastructure
Location advantages: Vadinar's natural deep draft, connectivity to major shipping routes, proximity to key ports (Mundra and Kandla)
Target vessels: Large commercial and foreign-flagged vessels
Current infrastructure gap: India lacks adequate domestic capacity to repair large vessels exceeding 230 m in length
New capacity: Will enable repair of vessels up to 300 m length
Expected employment generation: Approximately 290 direct jobs and around 1,100 indirect jobs
Employment sectors: Ship repair, logistics, and ancillary industries
Strategic benefits: Reduce dependence on foreign shipyards, curb foreign exchange outflow, improve turnaround times, strengthen repair capability on western coast
Broader impact: Enable growth of maritime ancillary services and MSMEs in surrounding region
Alignment with national initiatives: Supports Maritime India Vision 2030 and Maritime Amrit Kaal Vision 2047
