Canadian government officials, including representatives of Prime Minister Mark Carney’s administration, travelled to Caracas last week to evaluate the status of the Canadian embassy building.
The embassy has remained closed since 2019 when Canada officially recognized opposition leader Juan Guaidó as the legitimate president of Venezuela.
Nicolás Maduro stayed in power until the United States military removed him in January 2026; his vice‑president Delcy Rodríguez was installed as acting president thereafter.
Global Affairs Canada confirmed the visit, stating that Canada is reviewing the changing situation in Venezuela and whether conditions support re‑establishing a physical diplomatic presence.
The department added that periodic official diplomatic travel to Venezuela may be undertaken as part of the assessment process.
