The Ministry of Home Affairs has announced significant progress in Phase-I Houselisting and Housing Census operations for Census 2027. Field operations commenced in Himachal Pradesh on June 16, 2026, and will continue through July 15, 2026, following the completion of the self-enumeration period. Simultaneously, the self-enumeration facility has become available in Kerala and Nagaland, where residents can complete the process through the official portal (se.census.gov.in) until June 30, 2026, with corresponding field operations scheduled from July 1 to July 30, 2026.
House-to-house field operations are currently underway in five states/union territories: Gujarat, Jammu & Kashmir, Ladakh, Puducherry, and Uttar Pradesh. Residents who have completed self-enumeration are instructed to keep their generated Self-Enumeration ID (SE ID) ready for enumerators during field visits. Households that did not opt for self-enumeration will be covered through physical visits.
The Houselisting and Housing Census operations conducted from May 16 to June 14, 2026, have been successfully completed in Maharashtra, Meghalaya, Rajasthan, Jharkhand, and the Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD) area. Punjab concluded its operations on June 13, 2026. To date, 23 States/UTs have completed the first phase of Census 2027, including Andaman & Nicobar Islands, Andhra Pradesh, Arunachal Pradesh, Bihar, Chandigarh, Chhattisgarh, Dadra & Nagar Haveli and Daman & Diu, Delhi, Goa, Haryana, Jharkhand, Karnataka, Lakshadweep, Madhya Pradesh, Maharashtra, Meghalaya, Mizoram, Odisha, Punjab, Rajasthan, Sikkim, Telangana, and Uttarakhand.
Census 2027 marks the first digital census with data collection through a dedicated mobile application while maintaining traditional door-to-door enumeration. The Houselisting and Housing Census phase collects information on housing conditions, household details, amenities, and assets through a structured questionnaire comprising 33 notified questions. All information collected under the Census Act, 1948, remains strictly confidential and is used solely for statistical purposes and development planning. Residents are requested to actively participate and cooperate with enumerators during field visits.
