The Ministry of Home Affairs has announced the commencement of Self-Enumeration (SE) facility for Houselisting and Housing Census (HLO) under Phase I of Census 2027 in Tamil Nadu and Tripura. This facility, available through the official Self-Enumeration portal (se.census.gov.in) until July 31, 2026, allows residents to complete the process digitally. Households that complete Self-Enumeration are requested to keep their generated Self-Enumeration ID (SE ID) ready to share with Enumerators during subsequent field visits scheduled from August 1 to August 30, 2026.
Simultaneously, field operations for Houselisting and Housing Census are currently underway in Kerala and Nagaland and will continue until July 30, 2026. Households that have not opted for Self-Enumeration will be covered during physical door-to-door visits by Enumerators.
The first phase of Census 2027 has already been completed in 29 States/UTs: Andaman & Nicobar Islands, Andhra Pradesh, Arunachal Pradesh, Bihar, Chandigarh, Chhattisgarh, Dadra & Nagar Haveli and Daman & Diu, Delhi, Goa, Gujarat, Haryana, Himachal Pradesh, Jammu & Kashmir, Jharkhand, Karnataka, Ladakh, Lakshadweep, Madhya Pradesh, Maharashtra, Meghalaya, Mizoram, Odisha, Puducherry, Punjab, Rajasthan, Sikkim, Telangana, Uttar Pradesh and Uttarakhand.
Census 2027 marks the first digital census in India, utilizing a dedicated mobile application for data collection while retaining traditional door-to-door enumeration to ensure comprehensive coverage. The Houselisting and Housing Census phase collects information on housing conditions, household details, amenities, and assets through a structured questionnaire comprising 33 notified questions.
All information collected under the Census Act, 1948, remains strictly confidential and is used solely for statistical purposes and development planning. Residents in notified States and Union Territories are requested to actively participate and cooperate with Enumerators during field visits.
