The Office of the Controller General of Patents, Designs and Trade Marks (CGPDTM) has announced the tentative schedule for the 2027 Patent and Trade Marks Agent Examinations. The Trade Marks Agent Examination (TAE) 2027 is scheduled for January 9, 2027 (Saturday), while the Patent Agent Examination (PAE) 2027 will be conducted on January 10, 2027 (Sunday).
Both examinations will be held across 15 centers in India: Ahmedabad, Bengaluru, Chandigarh, Chennai, Delhi, Guwahati, Hyderabad, Indore, Jodhpur, Kolkata, Lucknow, Mumbai, Nagpur, Pune, and Thiruvananthapuram.
The examination structure consists of three components: Paper I with objective-type multiple choice questions carrying 100 marks, Paper II comprising subjective/descriptive questions carrying 100 marks, and a Viva Voce carrying 50 marks to assess candidates' ability and suitability to practice before the Intellectual Property Office.
To qualify, candidates must secure a minimum of 50 marks each in Paper I and Paper II, and obtain an aggregate of at least 60% of the total marks. Only eligible candidates who qualify will be registered in the Register of Patent Agents or Register of Trade Marks Agents.
The Patent Agent Examination is conducted under Rule 110 of the Patents Rules, 2003 (as amended) read with Section 126 of the Patents Act, 1970, while the Trade Marks Agent Examination follows Rule 144 of the Trade Marks Rules, 2017. These examinations aim to address the growing demand for qualified professionals in India's expanding intellectual property ecosystem, where Patent Agents assist with patent drafting and filing, and Trade Marks Agents facilitate trademark registration and manage IP portfolios, including support for Copyrights and Geographical Indications registration.
