The Department of Fisheries, Ministry of Fisheries Animal Husbandry and Dairying has been implementing the Pradhan Mantri Matsya Sampada Yojana (PMMSY) with a total outlay of Rs. 20,750 crore from 2020-21 to 2026-27 for sustainable development of fisheries and aquaculture across all States and Union Territories including Chhattisgarh.
During the last six years (2020-21 to 2025-26), the Department of Fisheries accorded approvals to projects worth Rs. 956.86 crore for Chhattisgarh, with a central share of Rs. 321.01 crore. Out of this approved central share, an amount of Rs. 274.16 crore was actually released to the Government of Chhattisgarh during this period.
The major infrastructure projects approved under PMMSY for the state include 28 fish seed hatcheries, 3200 hectares of new fish ponds, 287 recirculatory aquaculture systems, 820 biofloc units, 14 fish feed mills of various capacities, 511 small fish transport vehicles, and 8500 cages in reservoirs. Additionally, one Integrated Aqua Park (IAP) was approved along with social security measures including accidental insurance coverage for 5.52 lakh fishers annually, livelihood and nutritional support to 9,667 fishers annually, and improved access to institutional credit to 4,189 fishers through Kisan Credit Cards.
These collective interventions have significantly enhanced fish production in Chhattisgarh, which increased from 3.14 lakh metric tonnes in 2014-15 to 8.73 lakh metric tonnes in 2024-25. The scheme has also contributed to increased farmers' incomes, promoted entrepreneurship, generated rural employment, reduced post-harvest losses, and supported overall socio-economic development of the fisheries sector in the state.
