The Ministry of Environment designates CMLRE's Bhavasagara Centre as a National Repository for deep-sea fauna under the Biological Diversity Act, 2002.
The repository houses over 3,500 identified specimens and will serve as the official repository for new species discovered in Indian waters.
The designation aims to preserve deep-sea biodiversity and support marine research and conservation efforts.
