The Ministry of Defence has approved the establishment of a 250 MW Solar Power Project with Battery Energy Storage System (BESS) at Sitapur (Ex-Cantonment), Uttar Pradesh. This first-of-its-kind renewable energy project will be developed on approximately 850 acres of vacant defence land and represents a major initiative by the Ministry of Defence to optimize the utilization of its vacant lands.
The project is designed to enhance energy security for defence establishments across Uttar Pradesh while promoting clean energy and reducing dependence on conventional energy sources. It is expected to substantially reduce expenditure on conventional grid power procurement, resulting in significant long-term savings to the Government exchequer over the project's lifecycle.
NTPC Limited has been tasked with implementing the project through a competitive bid process to ensure optimal energy pricing and maximum savings for defence establishments. The implementation will be carried out in close coordination with Integrated HQ of MoD (Army) and Directorate General Defence Estates (DGDE). Upon completion, the Sitapur Solar Power Project is anticipated to become one of India's most significant renewable energy projects established on defence land and serve as a benchmark for future solar-plus-storage initiatives in the defence sector.
