11 Years of Digital India: Transformative Digital Infrastructure Achievements

India's Digital India initiative, launched on 1 July 2015, has evolved into a robust digital public infrastructure transforming payments, public service delivery, and livelihood support across the nation. The Unified Payments Interface (UPI), launched in 2016–17, now accounts for nearly 49% of the world's real-time payment transaction volume, making India the world's largest real-time payment system. This achievement reflects India's transition from a predominantly cash-based economy to digital payments becoming the preferred mode for millions nationwide.

Global Recognition and UPI Expansion

India's digital payment ecosystem is gaining international recognition, with Greece recently becoming the 10th country to adopt UPI services, expanding its global footprint and enabling seamless digital payments abroad for Indian travelers and businesses. The UPI success rests on an integrated ecosystem including unified payments infrastructure, banking connectivity, digital identity through Aadhaar, affordable internet, nationwide connectivity through 5G and optical fiber, smartphone penetration, and digital innovation through user-friendly applications.

Healthcare Transformation Through Poshan Tracker

The Poshan Tracker, developed under Saksham Anganwadi & Mission Poshan 2.0 by the Ministry of Women & Child Development, has revolutionized nutrition service delivery through real-time monitoring. As of May 2026, the platform has registered over 13.30 lakh Anganwadi Workers serving 8.93 crore beneficiaries including pregnant women, lactating mothers, children aged 0–6 years, and adolescent girls, with 99.89% Aadhaar verification. Daily transactions have increased from approximately 1 crore in 2021 to over 22 crore in 2026, with nationwide implementation across all 36 States and Union Territories.

The platform features Aadhaar and mobile verification, geo-tagging, geo-fencing, time-stamped data capture, and a Face Recognition System for ration distribution. The Nominee Module allows authorized ration collection, while a multilingual interface and beneficiary portal ensure accessibility. The system maintains a live monthly database tracking nutrition indicators for over 77 million children, enabling real-time dashboards, heat maps, and evidence-based policymaking.

Economic Empowerment Through Indiahandmade

The Indiahandmade initiative by the Ministry of Textiles, developed by Digital India Corporation, directly connects artisans, weavers, Self-Help Groups, producer companies, and rural enterprises with customers nationwide. The platform has onboarded over 3,900 artisans and weavers and lists more than 21,000 handcrafted and handloom products. It features simplified digital registration, multilingual support, AI-powered listings, integrated order management, secure payments, and free logistics, enabling first-time digital sellers. Crucially, the entire sale proceeds are credited directly to artisans' bank accounts without deductions, eliminating intermediary commissions and making handmade products more affordable while increasing artisan incomes.

Supporting Digital Infrastructure

India's digital transformation is supported by multiple pillars: unified payments infrastructure enabling instant fund transfers across banks; banking connectivity through a unified digital framework; digital identity through Aadhaar providing trusted identification; affordable internet with rapidly expanding 5G networks and optical fiber reaching rural areas; smartphone penetration as the primary access gateway; and a vibrant ecosystem of digital applications ensuring security and accessibility even in case of device loss.
