Digital India Programme 11-Year Transformation Achievement
The Digital India Programme completes 11 years on 1 July 2026, marking a significant milestone in India's digital transformation journey. The programme has built one of the world's largest Digital Public Infrastructure ecosystems, fundamentally changing how citizens connect, learn, transact, and access public services across the country. India has emerged as a global leader in digital payments and digital governance innovation, with the digital economy contributing 12-14% of India's GDP and expected to reach approximately 20% over the next decade.
Infrastructure and Connectivity Achievements
The programme's foundation rests on nine strategic pillars that have dramatically expanded digital access. Under BharatNet-1 and BharatNet-2, 2.15 lakh Gram Panchayats (97% of the 2.22 lakh target) have been connected with nearly 7 lakh km of optical fiber cable laid nationwide. The broadband Internet subscriber base reached 106.58 crore by March 2026, while over 6.5 lakh Common Service Centres and 1.6 lakh post offices deliver digital services in rural and underserved regions. Electronics manufacturing production increased from ₹1.9 lakh crore in FY 2014-15 to approximately ₹12 lakh crore by March 2026, making India the world's second-largest mobile phone manufacturer.
Financial Inclusion and Digital Identity Revolution
The JAM Trinity (Jan Dhan, Aadhaar, Mobile) revolutionized financial inclusion and welfare delivery. Bank accounts under Jan Dhan Yojana expanded from 14.72 crore in March 2015 to 57.78 crore by February 2026, with deposits growing from ₹15,670 crore to ₹2.94 lakh crore. Aadhaar enrolments increased from 0.42 crore in 2010-11 to over 144 crore by March 2026, enabling direct benefit transfers worth over ₹51 lakh crore to 176 crore citizens by June 2026. Over 98% of Public Distribution System food grains are now Aadhaar-authenticated, with more than 3,100 Direct Benefit Transfer schemes and 360+ public services using Aadhaar-based authentication. Cumulative e-KYC transactions reached 2,393 crore as of 30 April 2025.
Digital Payments and Commerce Transformation
Unified Payments Interface (UPI) has transformed digital payments, growing from 2 crore transactions in FY 2016-17 to 24,162 crore transactions in FY 2025-26, accounting for nearly 49% of worldwide real-time digital payment volume. UPI's global footprint now extends to nine countries. Government e-Marketplace (GeM) recorded cumulative Gross Merchandise Value of over ₹18.4 lakh crore by June 2026, including ₹5 lakh crore in FY 2025-26, enabling over 11 lakh MSMEs to access government markets. Open Network for Digital Commerce (ONDC) expanded to over 20 crore buyers, 5 lakh sellers across 1,000 cities, with nearly 90 lakh monthly transactions.
Healthcare and Education Digitalization
Digital platforms have significantly transformed public healthcare delivery. The Online Registration System recorded over 1.37 crore online appointments by 24 June 2026. eSanjeevani telemedicine platform facilitated over 48 crore consultations and onboarded more than 2.3 lakh healthcare providers. CoWIN managed over 220 crore vaccine doses during the COVID-19 pandemic. Tele MANAS provided free tele-counselling and mental health support through over 40.42 lakh calls by June 2026. In education, DIKSHA platform crossed 2 crore registered users with QR-coded textbooks and interactive content, while SWAYAM hosted over 4,400 courses and SWAYAM Prabha broadcast through 48 dedicated DTH channels. APAAR generated over 33.74 crore digital academic identity IDs by June 2026.
Skills Development and Global Leadership
Digital India has created large-scale employment opportunities, with the IT and ITeS industry generating USD 283 billion revenue in FY25. India's 2,100+ Global Capability Centres employ approximately 26 lakh professionals. PMGDISHA trained 6.39 crore rural citizens in digital literacy by March 2024. FutureSkills Prime registered over 26 lakh candidates for emerging technologies, while Skill India Digital Hub enrolled over 32 lakh candidates by March 2026. India has signed MoUs with 24 countries for cooperation on India Stack and DPI systems, with UPI live in eight countries including UAE, Singapore, France, Mauritius, and Sri Lanka.
