The Ministry of Science & Technology's Department of Scientific and Industrial Research (DSIR) and Council of Scientific & Industrial Research (CSIR) launched the Swachhata Hi Seva cleanliness campaign running from September 17 to October 2, 2026. The campaign commenced with a pledge-taking ceremony led by Dr. (Mrs) N. Kalaiselvi, Secretary of DSIR and Director General of CSIR, who urged officials and staff to actively participate in cleanliness and hygiene activities.
Under the guidance of Joint Secretary Shri Surinder Pal Singh, the nodal officer for the campaign, multiple activities were organized across DSIR organizations including CEL, NRDC, and CSIR laboratories nationwide. Key initiatives included an awareness session on Solid Waste Management (SWM) Rules, 2026 at CSIR-IMTECH Chandigarh, where housekeeping and horticulture staff were educated on four-way segregation of solid waste at source and the shift from 'Collect and Dump' to 'Segregate, Process and Recover' approaches.
On September 19, 2026, a 'Carry Your Own Bag' awareness drive was conducted to encourage reduced use of single-use plastics and promote reusable bags, alongside demonstrations of four-way source segregation. A 'Safai Mitra Swasthya Shivir' medical camp was organized at CSIR-CIMAP Dispensary on September 26, 2026, providing comprehensive medical check-ups for approximately 50 sanitation workers from CSIR-CIMAP, Lucknow and Staff Colony.
Additional campaign activities included a thematic art competition for DSIR employees at Technology Bhavan, an awareness lecture on Solid Waste Management for students at KV RRL Jorhat, and plantation drives under the 'Ek Ped Maa Ke Naam' initiative aimed at promoting Green India and Clean India objectives.
