The Election Commission of India (ECI) organized the second regional conference on Electoral Literacy Clubs (ELC 2.0) and ECINET in Lucknow, focusing on strengthening electoral literacy and democratic awareness among young citizens through educational institutions. CEC Gyanesh Kumar addressed participants, including students and teachers from Uttar Pradesh, highlighting that elections in India are conducted transparently under constitutional and ECI guidelines, with audit by political parties. He underscored the importance of familiarizing students and young electors with electoral processes, democratic values, registration, polling, counting, and ECI's role. The ELC 2.0 initiative, tagged 'Learn Democracy. Lead Democracy.', aims to encourage young and first-time voters to understand and participate meaningfully in democracy. It will use the ECINet digital platform for election-related services and a dedicated ELC portal to create a pan-India network. The initiative targets India's extensive educational ecosystem, comprising approximately 15 lakh schools with nearly 25 crore students and over one crore teachers, and higher education with nearly 1,500 universities and around 70,000 institutions enrolling 4.33 crore students. ELC 2.0 seeks to promote factual electoral education, enhance awareness of electoral transparency, and encourage youth to become ambassadors of informed democratic participation.
