ECLGS 5.0 Achieves Major Milestone with 1 Lakh Guarantees
The Emergency Credit Line Guarantee Scheme (ECLGS) 5.0, approved by the Union Cabinet on May 5, 2026, has reached a significant milestone with total guarantees issued crossing the 1 lakh mark. As of June 9, 2026, the scheme has issued 1,06,549 guarantees with a total guaranteed amount of ₹48,484.26 crore, demonstrating extensive credit protection extended to lenders.
Sectoral and Institutional Distribution
The MSME sector accounts for 96% of guarantees by number and 86% of the total guaranteed amount, highlighting the scheme's focus on supporting small and medium enterprises. Public Sector Banks have been the primary implementers, processing 96% of all guarantees issued under the scheme, ensuring quick acceptance and implementation.
Scheme Structure and Objectives
The scheme provides differentiated guarantee coverage with 100% guarantee for MSME borrowers and 90% guarantee for non-MSME sectors. This structure is designed to encourage financial institutions to extend credit aggressively to sectors affected by liquidity challenges arising from the West Asia crisis. The overall aim is to infuse additional credit of ₹2,55,000 crore to existing borrowers.
Implementation and Outreach
The scheme leverages a diverse network of lenders including Public Sector Banks, Private Sector Banks, Regional Rural Banks, Small Finance Banks, and NBFCs to ensure broad geographical and sectoral reach. Member Lending Institutions have conducted extensive outreach through websites, emails, and SMS to promote scheme benefits. The Department of Financial Services has facilitated outreach programs at nine locations through State Level Bankers' Committees with participation from NCGTC, PSB Alliance Team, state MSME and commerce departments, banks, industry associations, and enterprises. A second phase of the outreach program is under active consideration.
