Union Minister of State Dr. L. Murugan announced a significant reduction in India's unemployment rate from 6% to 3.2%, attributing this improvement to the government's flagship schemes including Make in India, Start-up India, Stand-up India, and the MUDRA loan scheme. The announcement was made during the 20th Rozgar Mela event held at D.G. Vaishnav College in Chennai, where the Minister distributed appointment letters to 285 newly recruited candidates selected for various Central Government Ministries, Departments, and organizations.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi participated via video conferencing in the Rozgar Mela organized across 45 locations nationwide, distributing appointment letters to more than 51,000 newly recruited youth. The Chennai event saw recruits joining key bodies including the Income Tax Department, Employees' State Insurance Corporation (ESIC), Airports Authority of India, Ministry of Defence, Department of Posts, Jawaharlal Institute of Postgraduate Medical Education and Research (JIPMER), and Southern Railway.
The Minister highlighted the government's employment generation achievements, noting that over 12.75 lakh appointment letters have been distributed through Rozgar Melas to date. He also reported substantial growth in the startup ecosystem, with the number of startups increasing from approximately 400 in 2014 to more than 2.5 lakh currently, with a significant number of founders being youth below 30 years of age.
Dr. Murugan emphasized the expanding opportunities for youth in frontier sectors such as space technology and atomic energy, while noting the increasing participation of women across sectors including space, defence, education, governance, and public administration. He urged new recruits to view their roles as an opportunity to serve the nation and contribute to achieving the vision of a Viksit Bharat by 2047.
